Super Bowl History
The NFL had some very auspicious beginnings, hardly the game we know today. Over the years, the game grew from local sandlot entertainment to become the most popular sport in America. One of the main culprits in making the sport so popular was the Super Bowl. First played to a crowd of 61, 946 in 1967, the game has evolved into a worldwide event with the 2011 Super Bowl hosting 103, 219 fans.
The very first Super Bowl was played on January 15, 1967 between the Green Bay Packers and the Kansas City Chiefs. At the time, the contest was invented to showcase the league and pit the best team from the more established NFL up against the upstart AFL. The NFL, and the Packers specifically, flexed their muscles during the first two contests, winning them handily.
Football as we know it would change dramatically on January 12, 1969, when a young, cocky QB for the New York Jets predicted his team would win Super Bowl III. Joe Namath backed up his words and the Jets beat the NFL powerhouse Baltimore Colts by a score of 16-7. The Colts put their heads down and walked off the field and Joe Namath became a household name.
The Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers dominated the 1970s football scene and it is reflected in the appearances both teams made in the Super Bowl during this era. Pittsburgh would get the best of the Cowboys in these contests, but they made for some of the best games to date in the Super Bowl.
The 1980 Super Bowls were dominated by the San Francisco 49ers. The team would win four Super Bowls from 1982 to 1990 and add a fifth in 1995 for good measure. The team is a perfect five for five in Super Bowls, ranking among the leaders, tied with Cowboys and trailing only the Steelers.
The Dallas Cowboys would take over the game in the 1990s when Troy Aikman led the team from the worst record in the league to Super Bowl Champions in just a few years. The Cowboys would win three Super Bowls in a four-year span, marking one of the greatest dynasties football has ever seen.
Both New England and Pittsburgh would come to prominence during the new millennium. New England has appeared in four Super Bowls since 2000, winning three of them. Pittsburgh has appeared in three Super Bowls during the same span, winning two of them. Pittsburgh's last appearance was on February 6, 2011, when Aaron Rodgers led the Green Bay Packers back to glory and put the ghost of Brett Favre to rest once and for all by leading the Packers to a 31-25 victory.
