Born Eric Marlon Bishop, Jamie Foxx was raised in Terrell, Texas by his grandparents after his birth parents abandoned him. He attended Terrell High School, where he received good grades along with participating in scholastic sports. As a young man, he had the ambition to play for the Dallas Cowboys but luckily, for the viewing public, this was not the career direction he chose. At a very young age, his interest in music was fostered by his grandmother who insisted he take piano lessons at the tender age of five.
On a dare, he got up on stage at an open mic night at a local nightclub in 1989 and told jokes along with doing impressions. He found that he was good at this but soon realized that the emcee at the club would call female performers to the stage first. He subsequently changed his name to Jamie Foxx to reduce the chance of gender bias when being called up. He chose the last name of Foxx for his stage name in tribute to Redd Foxx, one of the most prolific black comedians of the time.
In 1991, he was invited to join the cast of In Living Color , a half hour sketch comedy show, produced by the Wayans brothers. Following this boost to his career, he was offered a recurring role on the sitcom Roc along with finally being given his own show called aptly enough, The Jamie Foxx Show . Television, however, was not enough and he began his career in movies in 1992 with a role in Toys . His first dramatic role was reminiscent of his childhood as he portrayed a football star in Any Given Sunday .
His musical background prompted him to try his hand at mainstream recording. He released his first album Peep This in 1994 but his career did not get a boost until 2004 when he collaborated with Twista and Kanye West on Twista's song, "Slow Jamz." His second solo album went double platinum and has sold over 1.9 million copies in the United States alone. Over the years, he has worked with artists in the music industry such as Rascal Flatts, Drake, Justin Timberlake, and Ne-Yo.
