Elmont, NY (SportsNetwork.com) – Verrazano, winner of the Haskell Invitational, will make his final career start Friday in the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile at Santa Anita.

Owned by Let’s Go Stable and partners, Verrazano will leave the starting gate for the Dirt Mile from post 10 with Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez riding. After the race the 3-year-old colt will be retired to stallion service at Ashford Stud.

“Verrazano is a very welcome addition to the roster here at Ashford which will be the strongest we’ve ever assembled,” said Ashford’s Director of Sales Charlie O’Connor. “Verrazano’s brilliance is there for all to see, but he’s also got the pedigree and looks to match. He’s very exciting.”

Trained by Todd Pletcher, Verrazano began his racing career in January and reeled off four straight wins, including the Tampa Bay Derby and Wood Memorial. Following a 14th-place finish to Orb in the Kentucky Derby the colt came back to win the Pegasus Stakes and Haskell at Monmouth Park. He finished seventh as the 8-5 favorite in the Travers behind Will Take Charge.

“Verrazano has given us some magical days, none more so than that 9 3/4-length romp in the Haskell,” said Let’s Go Stable’s Bryan Sullivan. “We’re really looking forward to Friday.”

Entering his final race, Verrazano has earned $1,556,300 with six wins in eight starts.
