Nicholasville, KY (Sports Network) – Former Florida Derby winner Take Charge Indy has been retired after suffering an injury Sunday at Monmouth Park.<\/p>\n
The 4-year-old colt, with Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens riding, broke a bone in his left front leg during the running of the Monmouth Cup.<\/p>\n
“I was on the lead with a big smile on my face. He was cruising. The only question was how much would he win by,” said Stevens<\/p>\n
Take Charge Indy was transported to Hogan Equine in central New Jersey where surgery was performed Monday morning by Dr. Patty Hogan.<\/p>\n
“The surgery went very well. He’s a super patient,” Dr. Hogan said.<\/p>\n
Owned by WinStar Farm, Take Charge Indy earned $1,103,496 in 14 career starts with three wins, four seconds and two thirds.<\/p>\n
As a 3-year-old trained by Patrick Byrne, the colt finished 19th in the Kentucky Derby after his Florida Derby victory. He came back in the fall with a third in the Fayette Stakes and was runner-up in the Carter Handicap.<\/p>\n
This year, he was third in the Donn Handicap, second in the Skip Away Stakes, won the Alysheba Stakes and was sixth in the Stephen Foster Handicap.<\/p>\n
