Lexington, KY (Sports Network) – Wednesday will mark one month since former Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra underwent abdominal surgery at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Ky.<\/p>\n
The 7-year-old mare remains at the hospital having had a surgical procedure performed Thursday, March 7 to drain an abscess that developed adjacent to her reproductive tract and rectum.<\/p>\n
“As part of the continuous evaluation and monitoring that Rachel is receiving at Rood & Riddle, an abscess adjacent to her reproductive tract and rectum was found.” said Dr. Brett Woodie last week.<\/p>\n
Her veterinarians, Dr. Bonnie Barr and Dr. Woodie, are pleased with her appetite beginning the week, and say her attitude and vital signs remain normal.<\/p>\n
Rachel Alexandra foaled a filly on Tuesday, Feb. 12 and shortly afterward began experiencing complications. She was admitted into Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital the next day with excess fluid in her abdomen and had abdominal surgery performed Wednesday, Feb. 13.<\/p>\n
She underwent exploratory abdominal surgery which discovered an infection. A damaged section of her small colon was surgically repaired.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
