Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) – The New York Mets declined the contract option on pitcher Johan Santana on Friday.

The Mets chose to buy out Santana at a reported $5.5 million, rather than pay him the reported $25 million he is owed for next season.

Santana last pitched in the majors on July 20, 2012. He had surgery to repair a torn anterior capsule in his pitching shoulder on April 2 of this year, marking the second time he had that surgery. He hopes to be ready for the start of 2014 spring training.

The 33-year-old lefty posted a 6-9 record and 4.85 earned run average in 21 starts in his last season on the hill in 2012. In 360 career appearances, 284 as a starter, the 2004 and 2006 Cy Young Award winner with the Twins has a 139-78 record with a 3.20 ERA.

His highlight as a Met came on June 1, 2012 when he tossed the first no-hitter in franchise history when he did so at Citi Field against the St. Louis Cardinals.
