Farmingdale, NY (Sports Network) – John Tavares, already the face of the New York Islanders’ revival, is now the official leader of the club.<\/p>\n
Tavares was named the 14th captain in Islanders history on Monday prior to a Children’s Foundation golf outing at the Bethpage State Park course.<\/p>\n
“John has developed into an elite player in this league and become the leader of our franchise both on and off the ice,” Islanders general manager Garth Snow said in a statement. “He consistently represents our organization with class and respect. John’s work ethic and determination inspires his teammates to succeed, which makes him the perfect choice to lead our franchise.”<\/p>\n
The Islanders selected the center with the first pick in the 2009 NHL Draft.<\/p>\n
Tavares, who will turn 23 on Sept. 20, was a finalist for the Hart Trophy as the league’s MVP after potting 28 goals and collecting 19 assists in 48 games last season and helping the Islanders clinch a playoff berth for the first time since 2007.<\/p>\n
The Ontario native inherits the ‘C’ from defenseman Mark Streit, who is now a member of the Philadelphia Flyers.<\/p>\n
“I’m honored to be named captain of the New York Islanders,” Tavares said in a statement. “To represent my teammates, coaches, management and the incredible fans that support this historic franchise is something that I take seriously. My experiences over the past four seasons have prepared me for this responsibility and I look forward to the challenge of leading the Islanders each season as we contend for the Stanley Cup.”<\/p>\n
