San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) – The Boston Red Sox made a flurry of roster moves prior to Monday’s opener of a three-game series with the San Francisco Giants, including selecting the contract of highly touted shortstop prospect Xander Bogaerts from Triple-A Pawtucket.

Boston also activated catcher David Ross, sidelined since mid-June with a concussion, from the 60-day disabled list and recalled reliever Brayan Villarreal from Pawtucket.

The 20-year-old Bogaerts, listed eighth overall on Baseball America’s top 100 prospects list heading into the season, has hit .297 with 15 home runs, 67 RBI and 63 walks in 116 games between Pawtucket and Double-A Portland. The Aruba native, Boston’s minor league offensive player of the year in 2012, batted .284 with nine homers and 32 RBI in 60 games for the PawSox.

Bogaerts is expected to initially be used in a utility role and is not in the starting lineup for Monday’s game.

Ross was batting just .185 with four homers in 23 games before being placed on the 7-day concussion DL for the second time this season on June 18, and had only one hit in 16 at-bats during a recent minor league rehab stint.

Ryan Lavarnway, who hit .283 with eight RBI in 60 at-bats while filling in for Ross as the backup catcher, was optioned to Pawtucket along with infielder Brock Holt and pitcher Rubby De La Rosa.

Villarreal was acquired from Detroit on July 30 as part of the three-team trade that also sent veteran pitcher Jake Peavy to the Red Sox. The 26-year- old Venezuelan has gone 4-8 with a 4.56 ERA over 73 career appearances in the majors, all with the Tigers.

De La Rosa returns to the minors one day after allowing a run on two hits in an inning of relief in Sunday’s 9-6 loss to the New York Yankees. The young right-hander posted a 4.76 ERA in five overall outings for Boston this season.

Holt started 17 games at third base for the Red Sox and hit .203 with 11 RBI in 23 overall contests with Boston.

In order to add both Bogaerts and Ross to the 40-man roster, All-Star pitcher Clay Buchholz and closer Andrew Bailey were each transferred to the 60-day DL.

Buchholz has registered a 9-0 record with an outstanding 1.71 ERA in 12 starts this year, but hasn’t pitched since July 8 due to a neck strain. Bailey underwent season-ending shoulder surgery on July 24.
