Hallandale Beach, FL (SportsNetwork.com) – Bluegrass Singer, winner of Saturday’s Mucho Macho Man Stakes at Gulfstream Park, is going to be stretching out in distance now that he established himself as a serious 3-year-old.

Trained by Marcus Vitali, Bluegrass Singer won the mile stakes by 1 3/4 lengths in front-running fashion.

“I always knew he had a lot of talent. I felt we would get our money’s worth, but I didn’t know how good he’d turn out,” Vitali said.

Bluegrass Singer, owned by Crossed Sabres Farm, has now won his last two starts, both at a mile. Vitali is looking to send him even longer in the next race.

“I think we’ve prepared him for the two-turn challenge. I eased him into different distances feeling he was going to get better with each start,” said Vitali. “He’s probably the most laid-back horse in the barn. When you gallop him, you gallop with lose reins. Game day, I guess he puts his game face on, so to speak.”

With the Florida Derby on March 28, Bluegrass Singer has two distance races leading to the 1 1/8-mile event. On Jan. 24 is the 1 1/16-mile Holy Bull followed by the 1 1/8-mile Fountain of Youth on Feb. 21.
