Baltimore, MD (SportsNetwork.com) – Olympic swimming legend Michael Phelps entered a guilty plea to a drunk driving charge on Friday in a Baltimore courtroom and received a one-year suspended sentence.<\/p>\n
Phelps was arrested Sept. 30.<\/p>\n
After entering the guilty plea Friday, Phelps told the judge he made a “bad mistake” and was looking toward his future. He entered a treatment program after his arrest.<\/p>\n
Phelps, who was suspended by USA Swimming for six months following his arrest, will remain on probation for 18 months.<\/p>\n
According to the Maryland Transportation Authority, Phelps was charged with DUI, excessive speed and crossing double lane lines within the Fort McHenry Tunnel on I-95 in Baltimore.<\/p>\n
The MDTA report said Phelps was driving a 2014 white Land Rover at a speed of 84 miles per hour in a 45-mph zone. An officer pulled the vehicle over beyond the tunnel’s toll plaza and Phelps failed to perform the standard field sobriety tests. He was cooperative throughout the process.<\/p>\n
This was Phelps’ second arrest on DUI-related charges, with the first coming in 2004 for which he also received 18 months’ probation and a $250 fine.<\/p>\n
