Boston, MA (Sports Network) – Derek Jeter’s 2013 season is back on hold after just one game.<\/p>\n
The New York Yankees announced on Friday that they have placed the former All- Star shortstop on the disabled list because of a Grade 1 right quad strain.<\/p>\n
The move is retroactive to July 12, one day after Jeter suffered the injury in his season debut against the Kansas City Royals. He went 1-for-4 in the contest as the designated hitter, connecting on a single in his first at-bat before going from first to third on a Robinson Cano base hit. He then scored on a sacrifice fly and also drove in a run in the 8-4 victory.<\/p>\n
However, the 39-year-old was pulled for a pinch-runner in the eighth inning due to what was initially called a tight right quad. An MRI revealed the strain.<\/p>\n
“It’s frustrating. I don’t know what else you want me to say. I worked hard to get to the point of rejoining the team,” Jeter said in a statement on July 12. “It’s not how you draw it up, but hopefully I’ll be back out there soon and help this team win some games.”<\/p>\n
Jeter had missed the first three-plus months of the season while recovering from a fractured left ankle suffered during last year’s AL Championship Series against Detroit.<\/p>\n
Jeter, who reached 3,000 career hits during the 2011 campaign, hit .316 in 159 games last season.<\/p>\n
In a corresponding move, the Yankees recalled infielder Brent Lillibridge from Triple-A Scranton\/Wilkes-Barre.<\/p>\n
A veteran of 347 major league games, the 29-year-old went just 1-for-24 with two RBI and nine strikeouts in nine contests earlier this season with the Yankees. Lillibridge is hitting .341 in 23 games with Scranton\/Wilkes-Barre.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
