{"id":23239,"date":"2014-09-08T13:59:00","date_gmt":"2014-09-08T13:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.stub.com\/hq\/news\/newton-expected-to-start-sunday-against-lions\/"},"modified":"2014-09-08T13:59:00","modified_gmt":"2014-09-08T13:59:00","slug":"newton-expected-to-start-sunday-against-lions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.stub.com\/hq\/news\/newton-expected-to-start-sunday-against-lions\/","title":{"rendered":"Newton expected to start Sunday against Lions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Charlotte, NC (SportsNetwork.com) &#8211; Carolina Panthers coach Ron Rivera said he expects Cam Newton to start at quarterback for Sunday&#8217;s game against Detroit after missing the season opener because of a rib injury.<\/p>\n<p>Newton was declared inactive for Sunday&#8217;s game against Tampa Bay just prior to kickoff after being a limited participant in practice last week because of a fractured rib he sustained during the preseason.<\/p>\n<p>Rivera said the Panthers will employ the same strategy as last week, with Newton expected to practice all week before a final determination is made.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We expect to see him on the practice field come Wednesday,&#8221; Rivera said Monday. &#8220;We had a plan last week and unfortunately we didn&#8217;t get to (the point where he could play).&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Asked if he believed Newton would start, Rivera responded, &#8220;Yes, I do.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Derek Anderson started for Newton against the Buccaneers and completed 24- of-34 passes for 230 yards with a pair of touchdowns and no interceptions in the 20-14 victory.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Charlotte, NC (SportsNetwork.com) &#8211; Carolina Panthers coach Ron Rivera said he expects Cam Newton to start at quarterback for Sunday&#8217;s game against Detroit after missing the season opener because of a rib injury.
