{"id":22624,"date":"2014-08-25T18:36:00","date_gmt":"2014-08-25T18:36:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.stub.com\/hq\/news\/redskins-meriweather-suspended-for-illegal-hit\/"},"modified":"2014-08-25T18:36:00","modified_gmt":"2014-08-25T18:36:00","slug":"redskins-meriweather-suspended-for-illegal-hit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.stub.com\/hq\/news\/redskins-meriweather-suspended-for-illegal-hit\/","title":{"rendered":"Redskins&#8217; Meriweather suspended for illegal hit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) &#8211; The NFL has suspended Washington Redskins safety Brandon Meriweather for the first two games of the 2014 campaign for delivering an illegal hit during Saturday&#8217;s preseason tilt against the Baltimore Ravens.<\/p>\n<p>Meriweather struck Ravens wideout Torrey Smith near the head on a passing play in the second quarter of the Redskins&#8217; 23-17 loss to Baltimore, drawing a personal foul penalty for making forcible contact to a defenseless player.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the sixth time that Meriweather has been disciplined by the league for violating its unnecessary roughness rules. The eighth-year pro was handed a one-game ban for a pair of illegal hits during a game against Chicago last October.<\/p>\n<p>Meriweather can still appeal the ruling in an attempt to have it overturned or reduced.
