Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) – Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Erik Gustafsson has agreed to a contract with Avangard Omsk of Russia’s Kontinental Hockey League for the 2014-15 season.<\/p>\n
Flyers new general manager Ron Hextall confirmed a report out of Russia that stated Gustafsson, who played in 91 games with Philadelphia over the past four seasons, was headed to join the KHL club.<\/p>\n
“I spoke with Erik today and he informed me that he does in fact, have a deal in place to play overseas,” said Hextall in a statement. “Although we are disappointed in his decision, we wish him all the best.”<\/p>\n
The Flyers can still retain the 25-year-old’s rights by extending Gustafsson, a restricted free agent, a qualifying offer by June 30.<\/p>\n
Gustafsson served as primarily a depth defenseman for the Flyers in 2013-14, appearing in only 31 regular-season games and two playoff contests. He helped Philadelphia force a Game 7 in their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series with the New York Rangers, however, by scoring a key goal in the Flyers’ 5-2 win in Game 6.<\/p>\n
