Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) – The Miami Marlins will be without their ace pitcher for at least the next two weeks — and perhaps considerably longer.

Reigning National League Rookie of the Year Jose Fernandez was placed on the 15-day disabled list while the Marlins await the results of an MRI performed Monday on his ailing right elbow.

Fernandez, who followed up his dazzling rookie campaign by being named the NL’s Pitcher of the Month for April, could face the possibility of needing season-ending surgery if a ligament tear in the elbow is found.

The team has initially referred to the injury as a right elbow sprain.

Fernandez is coming off a rough outing in San Diego on Friday, in which the 21-year-old phenom was tagged for six runs — five earned — in five innings and saw a noticeable decrease in velocity on his fastball towards the end of his stint.

In eight starts this season, Fernandez has gone 4-2 with a 2.44 earned run average and racked up 70 strikeouts in just 51 2/3 innings.

The Cuban-born righty captured last year’s Rookie of the Year honor and finished third in voting for the NL’s Cy Young Award. Fernandez finished second in the league with a 2.19 ERA while going 12-6 with 187 strikeouts over 28 starts for a Marlins team that won an NL-worst 62 games.

Reliever Dan Jennings was recalled from Triple-A New Orleans in a corresponding move. The lefty posted a 1.74 ERA in 10 appearances for the Marlins prior to being sent to the minors last week.
