Minsk, Belarus (SportsNetwork.com) – Canada held off a furious third-period charge from the Czech Republic in a 4-3 win Monday at the 2014 World Hockey Championship.<\/p>\n
Nathan MacKinnon and Morgan Rielly scored 17 seconds apart during a five- minute power play to give the Canadians a 4-1 lead in the second period.<\/p>\n
The hard-charging Czechs answered with goals from Jiri Novotny and Tomas Hertl in a 49-second span to whittle the deficit to one with seven minutes remaining in the third, and continued to push for the equalizer.<\/p>\n
However, their comeback bid was thwarted by two late penalties as Canada hung on for its second straight win in the preliminary round after a surprising shootout loss to France in the opener.<\/p>\n
The Czech Republic has one win thus far in Group A play.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the high-powered Russians blasted the United States 6-1 to stay perfect in Group B play.<\/p>\n
Alex Ovechkin scored on a first-period penalty shot and set up Viktor Tikhonov twice during a four-goal barrage in the second period.<\/p>\n
Russia has scored 15 goals in its first three games.<\/p>\n
For the Americans, the loss was their first at this tournament after wins over Belarus and Switzerland.<\/p>\n
Earlier Monday, Belarus and France each orchestrated third-period comebacks.<\/p>\n
The host Belarusians posted their second straight win, clipping Switzerland 4-3 on Mikhail Grabovski’s goal with 2:06 remaining in the third period.<\/p>\n
Sergei Kostitsyn had two goals for Belarus, including the game-tying tally midway through the third.<\/p>\n
Switzerland remains winless through three games in Group B play.<\/p>\n
Antoine Roussel scored twice during France’s four-goal third period in a 5-3 victory over Slovakia.<\/p>\n
