The Rays are still deliberating whether the talented 24-year-old should attempt to rehab the injury or undergo Tommy John surgery, which would almost certainly sidelined him until at least spring training of next year.

“It has not been definitively said he has to get [surgery] done,” Rays manager Joe Maddon told the team’s official site Wednesday. “I don’t think [the ligament is] fully torn, from what I understand. I don’t know that. Based on the test with the dye, I’m sure it would be more conclusive.”

Moore left Monday’s 4-2 setback to the Kansas City Royals with one out in the fifth inning, eventually receiving the loss despite having allowed just one run on four hits.

The left-hander amassed an outstanding 17-4 record with a 3.29 ERA in 27 starts for the Rays last season. Moore has lost both of his outings to begin 2014, permitting three runs and walking five batters over a combined 10 innings.

Kansas City, MO (SportsNetwork.com) – A second MRI taken on Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Matt Moore’s ailing left elbow revealed a partial tear of his ulnar collateral ligament, an injury that could sideline the 2013 All-Star for the remainder of the season.
