Cleveland, OH (SportsNetwork.com) – The Cleveland Indians and second baseman Jason Kipnis have agreed to a long-term contract extension.

Details were not immediately provided by the team, but the Cleveland Plain Dealer has reported it to be a six-year deal worth $52.5 million with a club option for the 2020 season.

The new deal starts this season and covers Kipnis’ arbitration years as well as the first two years of free agency.

“Today is special,” said Kipnis on Friday before the team’s home opener against Minnesota. “I’ve wanted to stay here. I have wanted to be a part of the group of players that turned this organization around.”

It’s the third major contract the Indians have awarded in the past two months. Catcher Yan Gomes inked a new six-year deal earlier this week and outfielder Michael Brantley signed a four-year contract in February.

“Having stability is good, but having stability with the right guys is better,” noted Tribe manager Terry Francona.

Kipnis was an American League All-Star in 2013, his second full season with the Indians. He batted .284 with 17 homers, 84 runs batted in and 30 stolen bases over 149 games in 2013, following a 2012 rookie campaign that featured 14 homers, 76 RBI, 31 steals and a .257 average in 152 games.

The Illinois native, who just turned 27 on Thursday, went 3-for-13 in the season-opening series at Oakland. He owns a career average of .270 in 340 big league games.
