{"id":14295,"date":"2014-02-13T15:05:00","date_gmt":"2014-02-13T15:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.stub.com\/hq\/news\/mariners-make-rodney-signing-official-gutierrez-wont-play-in-2014\/"},"modified":"2014-02-13T15:05:00","modified_gmt":"2014-02-13T15:05:00","slug":"mariners-make-rodney-signing-official-gutierrez-wont-play-in-2014","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.stub.com\/hq\/news\/mariners-make-rodney-signing-official-gutierrez-wont-play-in-2014\/","title":{"rendered":"Mariners make Rodney signing official; Gutierrez won&#8217;t play in 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Peoria, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) &#8211; The Seattle Mariners officially signed closer Fernando Rodney to a two-year contract on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The deal is reportedly worth $14 million.<\/p>\n<p>Rodney spent the last two seasons in Tampa Bay as the Rays&#8217; primary closer, racking up 85 saves with a minuscule 1.91 earned run average over 144 relief appearances.<\/p>\n<p>The 36-year-old right-hander was named an All-Star in 2012, when he recorded 48 saves with a remarkable 0.60 ERA, setting a single-season record for the lowest ERA by a reliever in MLB history.<\/p>\n<p>Over 11 seasons in the majors, Rodney owns a career 3.70 ERA with a 29-44 record and 172 saves in 344 games, all in relief, for the Tigers, Angels and Rays since breaking into the league in 2002.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the Mariners placed outfielder Franklin Gutierrez on the restricted list.<\/p>\n<p>Gutierrez told the team that he will not play this season because of a relapse of the gastrointestinal issues (irritable bowel syndrome) that plagued him last offseason.<\/p>\n<p>He missed 106 games last season due to two separate stints on the disabled list.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Peoria, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) &#8211; The Seattle Mariners officially signed closer Fernando Rodney to a two-year contract on Thursday.
