After graduating college with a degree in graphic design, he moved to New York to pursue his standup career. After a short two years of performing there, he relocated to Los Angeles, California, where he continued to perform standup in many of the local clubs. In 1998, he was able to secure a spot on Comedy Central's Premium Blend comedy show, which he considers his big break into mainstream standup comedy. He has also hosted Saturday Night Live twice and for each season he hosted, the ratings were the highest seen for that year.

Over the years, he has released multiple comedy albums, all of which have gone platinum along with touring on a regular basis. One particular tour, Tourgasm , was filmed by HBO and turned into a nine week special that was later released on DVD. This tour not only included Dane but also comedians Robert Kelly, Gary Gulman and Jay Davis and the documentary chronicled not only the stage portions of the show but also behind the scenes look at their daily life on the road.

Along with his comedic talent on stage, he has evolved into a well-rounded actor on both the large and small screen. He has starred in 19 movies in one capacity or another along with lending his voice talents to two animated full-length films. He has appeared on television numerous times on talk shows and in some dramatic series including Hawaii Five-O.
