Conan O'Brien was born in 1963 in Brookline, Massachusetts, which is a suburb of Boston. His early years saw him leaning well towards writing and journalism as young as high school age. During high school, he was the managing editor of his school paper and while attending Harvard he was a writer for the Harvard Lampoon , the university's humor magazine. He was also the drummer in a local band, aptly named for the area as The Bad Clams .

After college, he relocated to Los Angeles to continue his writing career and found himself working on HBO's Not Necessarily the News for two years. In 1988 he began his three-year long position as a writer for Saturday Night Live, which also allowed him the opportunity to appear as an extra in many of the sketches. During his time withSNL,he and the rest of the writing team received an Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series.

For a brief time afterSNLhe found a position as a writer and producer in the popular animated series The Simpsons . He has to his credit four of the episodes during his time there that were solely his. These were "Marge vs. The Monorail," "New Kid on the Block," "Homer Goes to College," and "Treehouse of Horror IV." During this time, he was also credited with being the writer that told jokes and entertained the other writers during the work day.

After The Simpsons, he was chosen to host the show Late Night with David Letterman and in late 1993, Late Night with Conan O'Brien aired to mixed reviews. Beginning in 1996 and continuing through the entire run of the show while he was host, the writing team was nominated annually for an Emmy Award, which they only won once in 2007. In 2009, when he was leaving the show at the end of the last episode, he destroyed the entire set with an axe and handed the pieces to the audience as souvenirs.
