Carole King History

Carole King was actually born Carol Klein in 1942 while her family was living in Manhattan, although she was raised in Brooklyn. Living in Brooklyn, she was a classmate and girlfriend to Neil Sedaka and actually was the inspiration for "Oh! Carol," which was his first hit song. She also met her future writing partner and husband of eight years, Gerry Goffin, who even after their divorce continued to help her with her musical endeavors.

She and Gerry Goffin actually wrote a song that was to be the theme song to the TV sitcom I Dream of Jeanie, but the studio decided to go with the more familiar instrumental song that is still heard today in reruns. As a writing duo, they also wrote "Pleasant Valley Sunday" and "The Porpoise Song," both of which were recorded by The Monkees. This was towards the end of her marriage to Goffin and after the divorce, they lost touch. Once the divorce was finalized, she then ventured out on her own and began her solo career as both a singer and a songwriter.

In 1971, she released her second solo album, Tapestry, which quickly went to number one and stayed there, holding the record for the top selling solo album for 11 years. It was finally unseated by Michael Jackson's Thriller in 1982 but not before selling 25 million copies worldwide. Her 1976 release, Thoroughbred, was a compilation album that included help from David Crosby, Graham Nash, Waddy Wachtel and James Taylor. She also reunited with her ex-husband in a song writing capacity, Gerry Goffin, on four of the songs on the album.

Her solo career not only included touring after each album release but also branching out into other portions of the entertainment industry. She appeared in an off Broadway play in 1988 and also in Ireland in a production of Brighton Beach Memoirs . She had numerous appearances in television and movies along with doing some TV commercials. Carol has written many different songs for movies and television, including the theme to the 1985 animated movie The Care Bears Movie entitled "Care-A-Lot."
