This production was actually forged as a collaborative effort between four different theater geniuses. It was choreographed by Jerome Robbins, who was actually the director of its first showing in 1957 at the Winter Garden Theatre. It was written by Arthur Laurents, music was composed by Leonard Bernstein, and its lyrics were written by Stephen Sondheim who actually made his Broadway debut with this play. After starting off with record numbers, this play was then turned into a major motion picture in 1961 that included starlet Natalie Wood in the original cast.
