Toby Keith Covel was born in 1961 in Clinton, Oklahoma and raised in Moore, Oklahoma after a brief time in Fort Smith, Arkansas with his sister and brother. His grandmother owned a supper club where Toby would do odd jobs and get to watch the musicians play. He got his first guitar at eight-years old and learned to play. As a young man, he played football in high school and after graduation he worked on oil derricks. When he turned twenty, he and some friends formed a band called Easy Money and they played local clubs in Oklahoma.

In the early 1990s, he moved to Nashville after the work in the oil fields waned and his attempt at playing semi-pro football did not work out. He spent his time handing out demo tapes the band had made when they were playing in Oklahoma and Texas. When none of the labels picked him up, he returned to Oklahoma until a friend got him his big break. The friend, a flight attendant, presented Harold Shedd, who was a Mercury Record executive, with his demo tape on a flight she was working.

After hearing the tape, Shedd invited Toby back to perform live for him and subsequently signed him to the label in 1993. His first single, "Should've Been a Cowboy," went to number one and the album itself went platinum that year. His fourth album included a duet with Sting and a number one hit with "Dream Walkin'" along with a fan favorite in "How Do You Like Me Now." In 2002, he released Unleashed which included "Who's Your Daddy?," "Courtesy of the Red, White, & Blue," and "Beer for My Horses."

Along with his great successes in the music industry, Toby has also branched out in acting. He appeared as Bo Price, a washed up musician, in the 2005 movie Broken Bridges along with Kelly Preston, Burt Reynolds, Tess Harper, and Lindsey Haun. He has also appeared on television as himself in commercials for Telecom USA and Ford.
