Rascal Flatts History

Rascal Flatts is one of the few bands out there that started with and still continues to this day with its original members. Gary Levox, Jay DeMarcus and Joe Don Rooney formed the band in 1997 in Nashville, Tennessee, at a bar called the Fiddle and Steel Guitar Bar. DeMarcus and Levox were already playing there in another band and their guitarist had not shown up one evening for a show. Rooney was asked to sit in that evening and the crowd's reaction was so incredible that they instantly decided to partner up and form Rascal Flatts which was named after a garage band that Gary LeVox was a member of when he was young.

In 1999, the band was signed to Disney Music's Lyric Street Records and their first album for them was released in 2000. Their self-titled debut album contained the song "I'm Movin' On," which was given the Song of the Year Award by the Academy of Country Music in 2002. Their next album contained the hit single "These Days," which went to number one along with "Mayberry," which also hit number one on the country music charts that year. The video for the song "I Melt," off the same album, was actually banned from the Great American Country Network due to it containing partial nudity.

Over the next few years, the band released six more albums that have all met with great success. Their touring career is one of the most successful ever for a country music act and they have toured with some of the best country artists around. Some of the more incredible groups and acts they played with include Jo Dee Messina, Brook & Dunn and Kenny Chesney. In 2005, the band went over to Iraq and entertained the troops in their first USO show along with supporting the Red Cross as national spokesmen.

The band has been featured in other areas of entertainment, such as movies and television appearances. They were asked to perform at the White House in 2002 and were also featured on American Idol by performing a number with Carrie Underwood. They have lent their talents to movies with their songs being featured in the soundtrack of the Disney animated feature Cars and the Hannah Montana movie.
