Oakland Raiders History

The Oakland Raiders were a team that was founded in 1960 with the advent of the AFL football league. This team was originally going to be based in Minneapolis, but the NFL franchise Vikings were chosen instead. The Raiders were then literally "thrown together" and actually played without a true home field for the few years of their existence.

After their initial struggles, the Raiders hired general manager and head coach Al Davis to take control of the team. Davis would later become the owner of the Raiders, which he still is today. Under Davis's regime as general manager, this troubled organization began to turn around as they won their first AFL championship in 1967. However, they were then dispatched the Vince Lombardi's Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl II.

The reins of the head coaching position were then turned over to Hall of Fame coach John Madden in 1969. Madden led his team to this organizations first Super Bowl title in 1976 over the Minnesota Vikings. The next and final Super Bowl victory came in 1980 over the favored Philadelphia Eagles. After this championship, the Raiders would move to Los Angeles for brief period of time. They would capture another championship in 1983 under Tom Flores.

In 1993, the Raiders moved back to Oakland and they would remain competitive through the next two decades, but they would never get back to the prominence of the 1970's. Al Davis remained as owner and built another team that went to the Super Bowl in 2003. However, this team was ultimately defeated by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, ironically coached by former Raiders coach, Jon Gruden.

Other Oakland Teams

The Raiders are just one of the wide array of sports teams that call the San Francisco Bay area home. The other two teams actually based out of the Oakland are the Golden State Warriors and the Athletics. The Warriors are the NBA team affiliated with this city and have been a middling team since they were founded in 1946. However, they did win one NBA championship after they moved to Oakland from San Francisco in 1975.

One of the other and most successful baseball teams in Major League history based out of Oakland is the Athletics. Like the Warriors, this team was actually founded in Philadelphia with the advent of the American League. Behind the Yankees, the A's are the second most successful American League team in baseball history. They have won a total of nine World Series wins, with four of them coming after the move was made to Oakland.
