The Jets no longer have to play in a stadium named for another team as they have shared their sports complex with Giants since 1976. The new stadium which opens this year is called New Meadowlands Stadium and it is much more fan-friendly to the Jets over their old confines, Giant Stadium. New York Jets History
The franchise that would later become the New York Jets was formulated with the advent of the AFL Football league in 1959. This league would play its first games in 1960 when the Jets were still referred to as the Titans of New York. They changed the name to the Jets in 1963 due to their owner financial difficulties. In 1965, this organization hired Weeb Eubank as head coach and general manager who then built his franchise on a University of Alabama product, Joe Namath. Namath would lead the Jets to their first and only championship season in 1968, defeating the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III.
Since this championship season, the Jets slid back down the rankings after the merger was completed in 1970. This team fell on hard times for the next decade before making it to the playoffs four times in the 1980's. However, they would never get to the Super Bowl, causing much dismay to the Jet faithful. The 1990's were another disappointing decade as the team only managed to get into playoff contention twice during this time period.
However, after Bill Parcells was hired, the Jets took an immediate turn around and the franchise began to show signs of life again after 2000. However, it wouldn't be until the advent of Rex Ryan in 2009 that the team began to realize its full potential. Coupled with the league's best defense that year, the Jets fell short of the Super Bowl by one game, losing to the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC Championship.
Other New York Teams
While the Jets are definitely an interesting team that plays out of New York City, they certainly aren't the only team based here. The other NFL team that actually shares the same stadium with the Jets is the Giants. The Giants are a much older football team and as such have won more championships than the Jets. The Knicks are also one of the teams based out of this city and they play in the Eastern Conference of the NBA.
Hockey is also a major sport in New York City as they have two teams affiliated here in the Rangers and the Islanders. The Islanders play at the Nassau Veterans Coliseum while the Rangers share their venue with the Knicks at Madison Square Garden. The Yankees and Mets are the last two pro teams in this city and they play in the AL and NL leagues in the MLB. Of these two baseball teams, the Yankees are the far more dominant team, while the Mets have enjoyed success over the years.
