New Jersey Devils History

As far as franchises go, the team that eventually became the New Jersey Devils has suffered from being a terrible team to being one of the staple franchises of the NHL. Originally based out of Kansas City and named the Scouts, this organization was expanded to the NHL in 1974. However, due to lack-luster play, they were moved to Denver and became the Colorado Rockies for two seasons. Once again, poor gate and poor play eventually led to another move to New Jersey.

Once the last move took place in 1982, the franchise was renamed the Devils in honor of the Jersey Devil, a popular piece of folklore in the Pinelands of South Jersey. The team built up its defense by acquiring Ken Daneyko, Scott Stevens, and goaltender Martin Brodeur. These players would help the Devils usher in a the high period of New Jersey Devil dominance over the Eastern Conference.

Armed with the trap style defense, the Devils won their first Eastern Conference title in 1995 and followed this win with their first Stanley Cup Trophy by sweeping the Red Wings. They repeated as NHL champions by winning their second title in 2000 with help from players like Brodeur, Bobby Holik, and Patrick Elias. This same squad won them their third Stanley Cup in 2003, making the Devils the second most successful expansion franchise behind the New York Islanders with three Stanley Cup Trophies to their credit.

Other New Jersey Teams

Northern New Jersey is not well known for having a dominant sports culture, but that is actually contrary to the truth as this area plays host to four major sports teams across three sports leagues. Other than the Devils, the New Jersey Nets are a professional basketball team in the NBA and share the Prudential Center with Devils. The Nets were flirting with an NBA championship during the mid 2000's but fell short in both their appearances.

Although they may have New York as their name, both the Giants and the Jets teams are actually based in the nearby Meadowlands of North Jersey. The Giants are the areas NFC affiliate team and has recently won the Super Bowl in 2006. The Jets are the AFC organization for the North Jersey/New York City area and have recently cited by the HBO show, "Hard Knocks," for being an up and coming team with a young offense and dominant defense.
