James Taylor History

"Sweet Baby James," "JT," or simply James Taylor has become one of the living legends in folk music history. He was born in Massachusetts but at the age of three, his family relocated to Carrboro, North Carolina. Long before he picked up his first guitar, he trained exclusively on the cello, which helped him develop his unique picking style on the guitar. He likens it to a mix of his cello training and the fact that he used to play his sister's keyboard from time to time. While trying to attend college, he fell into a deep depression, which caused him to sleep twenty hours a day and would eventually spend time in a hospital to receive treatment for his issues.

In 1966, he checked himself out of the hospital and moved to New York to form a band. The band gained some small measure of success during this time and was found playing in Greenwich Village alongside some big name acts of the time, such as The Turtles and Lothar and the Hand People. This time in his life also saw him begin a heroin habit that almost destroyed him and his career. He subsequently realized his descent in to the drug culture lifestyle and reached out to his family.

His father flew him back to North Carolina where he attended a six-month rehab facility and had surgery done on his vocal chords to repair some damage. He moved to London for a brief time and became the first non-British act to be signed to Apple Records. He returned to America after yet another bout with drugs and entered another rehab facility in New York. In 1969, despite breaking both hands in a motorcycle accident, he still managed to continue to write songs and sign a deal with Warner Brothers records.

Over the years, Taylor has continued to tour and release hit after hit with some ups and downs along the way. He was married to Carly Simon for a time and they enjoyed some success together on his albums. He has been known to collaborate with many different artists over the years such as Art Garfunkel, Bonnie Rait, Stevie Wonder and Paul McCartney. His bout with drugs in his early years was overcome and defeated in the early 70's and he never returned to that lifestyle for the rest of his career, which continues to this day.
