Detroit Pistons History
The Pistons organization has been part of the NBA since being inducted into the league in 1948. Before that time, this franchise played in the National Basketball League. They originally played out of Ft. Wayne but were forced to move to Detroit to get a bigger market and to put to bed some of the scandals they faced in the early years of the franchise.
While the Pistons were never a bad team, they did not come into their own as a franchise until the 1980's when they were known as the "Bad Boys" of the NBA. They got this name due to their aggressive style of play during this period. With star talent in the form of Isaiah Thomas, Bill Laimbeer, and John Salley, the Pistons would become a dominant team in the 80's. This lineup led the Pistons to its first NBA title in 1989. They would follow this championship by repeating a victory the next year in 1990.
After the Thomas era ended, the Pistons remained a strong team in the 90's thanks to players like Grant Hill. However, the team did not get back into major contention until after 2000. When the team hired Larry Brown as head coach, they went on another championship run in 2004. Brown had a great defensive team that stifled opponents on their way to victory. Since the championship season of 2004, the Pistons have remained a dominant team in the east, making it to finals one more time in 2005.
Other Detroit Teams
Detroit is a powerhouse city when it comes to professional sports teams because they have representation in all four major leagues that play in North America. Other than the Pistons, Detroit is home to one of the most dominant NHL teams to ever take the ice: the Red Wings. The Red Wings have won more Stanley Cups than any other American-based hockey franchise and boast a great lineup on the ice each season.
Baseball has been a part of Detroit's sports culture reaching as far back as 1901. Today, the Tigers have one of the best young pitchers in baseball with Justin Verlander. The Detroit Lions are the NFL affiliate team of this city. The Lions have had a rough period over the last decade, but they are rebounding well with young talent like Matthew Stafford, Calvin Johnson, and Brandon Pettigrew.
