Carolina Hurricanes History

It took quite a long time and more than a few moves before the Hurricanes became entrenched as a North Carolina favorite. The franchise began in Boston in 1972 as a WHA member but the hometown Bruins were already the out front favorite of fans. In between scheduling issues and low attendance numbers, the decision was made to look for a new base of operations and the team was relocated to Hartford, Connecticut in 1975.

The team was renamed the Hartford Whalers and after the NHL absorbed the WHA in 1979, they found themselves up against far superior teams. Their record while in Connecticut was less than stellar, only managing one playoff game during their entire time there. Fans were simply not drawn to their games and the owners elected to try yet another relocation, this time to North Carolina.
With the relocation completed in 1997, the Whalers were transformed into the Hurricanes. This change proved to be the most auspicious move the team had made since its inception. The move seemed to revitalize the team and this was reflected in their level of play, which progressed in an upward motion in the following years. In 2002, the team finally played their break out season and won the conference championship. This was the high point of that season as the Hurricanes were unable to go on to win the Stanley Cup that year. Two short years later, the team went to victory, winning the conference championship yet again and going on to take the Stanley Cup from the Edmonton Oilers after a full seven game series.
