This opportunity led to him being cast in the ISpy series opposite Robert Culp. On this stage, he had become the first African American to be cast in a leading role in a dramatic television series. His role on ISpy was a milestone in his career and led him to receiving three Emmy awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.

In the 1970s, he attempted to launch his own sitcom and the few tries he made did not last past the first season. He did, however, have huge success with his animated Saturday morning cartoon show, Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids . This led him to get even more involved with educating children and working with The Electric Company , a PBS series designed to educate children. In 1984, his television sitcom career finally made headway with the airing of The Cosby Show as Dr. Heathcliff Huxtable, the patriarch of a suburban family living in Brooklyn, and quickly gained notoriety as the highest rated sitcom in history.

Over the years, Bill Cosby has spoken at numerous commencement events at various colleges and universities. Along this path, he has received 11 honorary doctors and degrees in various fields from the different educational institutions at which he has spoken.
